Designed stickers for packaging, gifts, products or your business? Before printing, make four decisions: size, material, cut shape and quantity.
You don’t have to learn all the printing terminology. Here’s what matters most.
Where will the stickers be used?
The surface and conditions affect material choice. A label on a paper bag has different requirements from a sticker on a container that’s handled throughout the day.
- Packaging and stationery: paper adhesive stock may be suitable when it stays dry.
- Surfaces exposed to handling or moisture: vinyl adhesive and sometimes protective laminate may be better options.
- Gifts and decoration: color, shape and finish might matter most.
Durability depends on the specific material, ink, finish, surface and exposure. Not every sticker is waterproof or suited to outdoor use.
Pick a practical size
If your design includes small text, check that you can read it at actual size. Try printing a paper mockup and cutting it out before ordering a large batch.
Rectangle, circle or custom shape?
Square, round and rectangular stickers are straightforward to specify. If the cut should follow your artwork’s outline, you’ll need to consider a cut contour and enough room around small details.
The possibilities depend on the design, stock and cutting process.
How should you prepare the file?
A print-ready PDF at final size is a good starting point. A high-resolution PNG may also work for illustrations. For custom shapes, we can explain how the contour should be marked or supplied.
Keep important lettering and logos a safe distance from the edge.
How many should you order?
Quantity affects both the production method and unit cost. If you’re testing a new design, say you need a small run. If stickers are part of ongoing packaging, estimate how many you use each month.
