How to print custom invitations without the hassle

A simple guide to invitation printing: paper, size, envelopes, color and preparing your Canva design.

Invitations can be simple or elaborate. If you’ve designed yours in Canva or found inspiration for one, the next step is deciding how it should look and feel in print.

You don’t need to know every paper type. A few practical decisions will get you started.

1. Start with the size and envelope

If you’ll use envelopes, choose or check them before finalizing the card size. A great-looking invitation isn’t much use if it won’t fit.

Consider whether you need a map, RSVP card or additional information sheet.

2. Choose paper for look and feel

A smooth paper can be a good choice for photos and fine details. A textured stock creates a different feel but may reduce the definition of tiny graphics. Paper weight affects stiffness, although two papers with the same weight can still feel different.

When possible, compare physical samples before deciding.

3. Make the text easy to read

Tiny type and pale colors can look fine on a bright screen but be hard to read in print. Double-check names, dates, addresses and times.

Leave a safe margin so important details aren’t close to the trim edge.

4. Prepare your design

If you used Canva, PDF Print is usually a good export choice. Include bleed when artwork reaches the edge. Check that every page has the correct dimensions and that the details are final.

If every invitation will feature a different guest’s name, ask about variable personalization before preparing the files—it can affect production and pricing.

5. Work out the quantity

Count invitations by household or group, depending on how you’ll hand them out. Ordering a few extras can help with last-minute changes. If the event is coming up soon, include the date when you contact the printer.
