Small-run business cards: what to know before printing

Need only a small batch of business cards? Learn how to choose paper, size, finishing and a print-ready file.

By Equipo Básico Impresión Digital · Published

Not every business needs thousands of cards. If you’re just starting out, updating your branding or testing a design, a small run may be the practical choice.

Focus on a readable, useful card before adding special finishes.

What should your business card include?

Start with your name or brand, a clear way to contact you and the most useful way for people to find you. That might be a phone number, email, website or QR code. You don’t have to include every social account.

QR codes can be helpful, but test yours at actual printed size and leave a visible alternative contact method.

Check the dimensions first

Business cards come in different sizes. Choose the finished dimensions and don’t assume every template is the same. Keep text safely away from the trim edge.

For double-sided cards, make sure the front and back have matching dimensions and orientations.

Which paper should you use?

A sturdy card stock often feels more substantial. A matte surface can look understated, while gloss can make some colors stand out. The best choice depends on the design, how you’ll use the cards and your budget.

Not every special finish is available for short runs. Ask about actual production options before designing around a particular effect.

How should you send the artwork?

A print-ready PDF at finished size is usually the best starting point. Add bleed if the artwork goes to the edge, following the print shop’s specifications. Check the logo’s sharpness and make sure phone numbers and small text are readable.

Avoid sending only a screenshot—it may not be sharp enough to print well.

How many cards do you need?

Consider how many you hand out and whether your contact details might change soon. A short run is useful when your brand is still evolving. Larger quantities may offer a lower unit cost, depending on the process.

Already have a design?
